Syracuse, N.Y. — A man in his 60s was found dead inside a Camillus home after firefighters responded to a small fire Wednesday afternoon.

Around 3:06 p.m., Fairmount firefighters were called to 197 Mason Drive in the town of Camillus for a house fire with heavy smoke coming from a front window and a report that someone was still inside, according to Onondaga County 911 dispatches.

The fire was contained to part of the first floor and was quickly put out, according to Camillus Police Chief Michael Schreyer. Damage to the home was minimal, he said.

The man’s cause of death has not yet been determined. He was dead when firefighters reached him inside the home, Schreyer said. His body remained in the house as police and fire investigators worked to determine what happened.

Police have not released the man’s name because they want to let the man’s family process the loss, Schreyer said.

National Grid, Onondaga County fire investigators, Camillus police and the Fairmount Fire Department all responded to the scene.

Mason Drive was closed from Terrace Drive to Skyview Tier for more than an hour.

This story will be updated when more information becomes available.
