Syracuse heads into its penultimate game of the season struggling for reasons to stay motivated. The season is guaranteed to be a losing one, and there is no shot at a postseason bowl game following last week’s 38-10 blowout loss to Miami. And the Orange are up against a top 10 foe in the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

It would be a reunion of sorts for injured Syracuse quarterback Steve Angeli, who spent the first three years of his college career playing under Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman. But Angeli’s Achilles injury against Clemson earlier in the season changed everything for the Orange, and he will not take the field opposite his old coach.

Instead, Fran Brown is expected to start freshman Joe Filardi against the Fighting Irish. It will be the second start of the walk-on’s career following a second benching of redshirt-sophomore Rickie Collins.

The Orange suffered their sixth-straight double-digit loss at No. 18 Miami on November 8. The Orange relied on young safeties against Miami instead of its biggest defensive names, providing a look at the Orange’s expected future. Syracuse is now 3-7 for the season.

Notre Dame enters 8-2 overall, and the Irish have not lost a single game since their first two of the season. Last week, they beat Pittsburgh 37-15. They are the 36.5-point favorites against the Orange, according to DraftKings.
