West Genesee and Sherburne-Earlville entered Monday’s Section III wrestling dual meet tournament from opposite ends of the seeding spectrum.
The Wildcats were the No. 1 seed in Division I thanks to an undefeated regular season. The Timberwolves had much lower expectations as the No. 5 seed in Division II.
Both West Genesee and Sherburne-Earlville put together outstanding runs to be named Section III dual meet champions.
West Genesee rolled through its first two matchups, highlighted by a 59-17 victory over Whitesboro in the quarterfinal round. In the championship meet, the Wildcats faced off against third-ranked Central Square. West Genesee overcame a strong push from the Redhawks to secure a 33-23 victory and a Section III title.
The Wildcats were propelled by multiple impressive performances throughout their run. Senior Maxx Fesinger led the way for West Genesee with several quality wins. Logan Willis and Aiden Wright also added valuable contributions for the Wildcats.
Sherburne-Earlville’s path to the title was littered with challenges. However, the Timberwolves defied the odds at every turn. Sherburne-Earlville took down No. 4 Adirondack in the quarterfinals. In the semifinal round, the Timberwolves were confronted with top-seeded Holland Patent. Yet again, Sherburne-Earlville came out on top to clinch the upset.
The Timberwolves were matched up against No. 3 Little Falls in the championship. The Mounties put up a solid fight with wrestlers such as Nick Sylstra showing off their talents. Ultimately, Sherburne-Earlville survived the back-and-forth affair to secure a 40-27 victory.
The Timberwolves were spurred by fantastic performances throughout from standout Landon Andrade. The All-CNY senior dominated at the 285-pound weight class for Sherburne-Earlville.
Both West Genesee and Sherburne-Earlville will represent Section III at the New York State dual meets at Onondaga Community College on Feb. 1.
