Tom Cruise is set to receive his first Oscar this year — and no, it’s not for his very dramatic popcorn eating.
On Tuesday, Hollywood’s film academy announced on Instagram that Cruise is one of four luminaries to receive an honorary Oscar for his lifetime achievements. Dolly Parton, Debbie Allen, and Wynn Thomas will also receive an honorary Oscar alongside Cruise.
These highly coveted golden statues will be presented to them at the 16th annual Governors Awards on Nov. 16.
Cruise, whose acting career spans over four decades, has been nominated for an Academy Award four times but never won. His nominations include Best Actor for “Born on the Fourth of July;” Best Actor for “Jerry Maguire;” Best Supporting Actor for “Magnolia;” and Best Picture for “Top Gun: Maverick.”
In a release from the Academy (via AP), President Janet Yang highlighted Cruise’s “incredible commitment to our filmmaking community, to the theatrical experience, and to the stunts community.”
This announcement comes two weeks after the Syracuse-born actor added a new Guinness World Record title to his repertoire.
On June 5, Cruise was recognized by the esteemed publication for his 16 burning parachute jumps while filming “Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning.” He has completed the most burning parachute jumps ever taken by an individual.
“Tom doesn’t just play action heroes – he is an action hero!” said Craig Glenday, Editor-in-Chief of Guinness World Records, in a release. “A large part of his success can be chalked up to his absolute focus on authenticity and pushing the boundaries of what a leading man can do. It’s an honour to be able to recognize his utter fearlessness with this new Guinness World Records title.”
Cruise also holds a Guinness World Records title for the most consecutive $100-million-grossing movies (actor) for his 11 films between “Jack Reacher” (2012) and “Mission: Impossible –The Final Reckoning" (2025).
