Clemson, S.C. -- In what had been a thrilling afternoon for the Syracuse football team, Syracuse quarterback Steve Angeli was forced from the game with 3:09 remaining in the third quarter due to an injury.
Angeli, who was injured early in the game but returned quickly with a wrap on his knee, went to the ground while running from a defender. He didn’t appear to be touched.
Just before the fourth quarter was set to start and the Orange leading 34-14, Angeli headed to the SU locker room. His left foot was in a protective boot and he used crutches to navigate his way off the field with a towel on his head.
Before he left, Angeli stood on the sideline, accepting hugs from teammates and staff members.
The quarterback had completed 18 of 31 passes for 244 yards and two touchdowns against a Clemson defense highlighted by multiple projected first-round draft picks. Angeli entered the game as the country’s leading passer.
