Syracuse firefighters battle heavy fire at vacant home Monday morning

Syracuse, N.Y. - Firefighters tackled an abandoned house fire in the Southwest neighborhood early Monday morning. No one was harmed in the blaze.

Firefighters got the call at 12:14 a.m. for a fire in the 800 block of South Avenue, according to Captain Erik Caster, a spokesperson for the department.

Caster said crews actually found the fire coming from a block away at 415 Hudson St.

Firefighters found heavy smoke and fire coming from the attic of the 2 1/2 story building, Caster said.

Firefighters encountered heavy conditions and opened up the house to find potential victims and also removed a nearby tree for access, Caster said.

The fire was brought under control in two hours, Caster said. Crews remained on scene for over four hours to extinguish hot spots and make sure everything was under control.

Fire investigators report that the source of the fire is still under investigation. It is the 13th vacant house fire this year in the city.

The vacant building sustained extensive damage, including partial collapse of several areas, Caster said.

Despite the beginning of winter conditions, there were no problems dealing with the fire last night, Caster said.
