Democrats didn’t expect to win Onondaga County Legislature: ‘Now we have to govern. Holy cow!’ Democratic Onondaga County legislators gathered in their caucus room Thursday, two days after an Election Day surprise doubled their membership, from 5 to 10. For the first time in nearly 50 years, Democrats will be in the majority on the 17-member board. In January, they will have new powers to lead committees, fight for spending on their priorities and to push back on Republican County Executive Ryan McMahon.

Is Micron’s mammoth property tax break a good deal for local schools? Micron Technology turned a profit of $8.5 billion in the fiscal year that ended in August. The North Syracuse school district cut 38 positions to balance its budget for the school year that started in September. Yet after Micron opens a massive chipmaking plant in the district in the next few years, a deal with Onondaga County will allow the wildly successful company to pay pennies on the dollar to the schools that could help educate its future workers. Here’s a look at what local school districts will get – and won’t get – from Micron’s deal.

How write-ins won every seat in a Central NY town: In September, when the ballots were printed for the town elections in Cato, it seemed the races were already won. There were no challengers for any of the five spots. That’s how things usually were in this town of 2,500 in rural Cayuga County. But less than six weeks before Election Day, a full slate of candidates mounted a write-in campaign for all five of the town posts up for election. And then they defied the odds by sweeping the entire ballot. Here’s how they did it.

Syracuse closes large city-owned downtown garage due to safety concerns: The city of Syracuse has closed its Fayette Street Parking Garage in downtown Syracuse after engineers discovered structural safety concerns in the 41-year-old structure. The garage was shut down Thursday following inspections by city engineers and the code enforcement department, city officials said. What’s next? That depends.

See the list: The FAA said Wednesday it would cut air traffic by 10% in 40 “high-volume” markets to maintain safety as the federal government shutdown strains air traffic controllers. The flight reductions could affect thousands of flights nationwide. Here’s a list of the affected airports.

Fran Brown names starting quarterback against Miami: Rickie Collins is back. Syracuse football coach Fran Brown has named the redshirt sophomore as the Orange’s starting quarterback for Saturday’s game at No. 18 Miami.
