SU-affiliated person assaulted in campus parking garage

Syracuse, N.Y. — A person affiliated with Syracuse University was assaulted in a campus parking garage Wednesday, police said.

Around 12:46 p.m., the individual was returning to their car in the University Avenue Garage, located at 1101 E. Adams St., when they found someone inside. During a brief struggle, the victim sustained a non-life-threatening laceration to their hand, according to a news release from the Department of Public Safety.

DPS officers responded quickly and took the suspect into custody within minutes, police said Wednesday. Authorities did not immediately release the suspect’s name or any charges when contacted by Syracuse.com | The Post-Standard.

Police said the suspect is not affiliated with Syracuse University and there is no longer a threat to the campus community. The investigation is ongoing.

The University Avenue Garage has over 1,000 parking spaces and is used daily by students and faculty.

DPS reminded students, staff, and visitors that vehicle larcenies and break-ins have been on the rise. Officials advised locking car doors, removing keys and keeping valuables out of plain sight.

Police ask anyone who witnessed the incident to contact the Syracuse Police Department at 315-442-5222 or the Syracuse University Department of Public Safety at 315-443-2224. Anonymous non-emergency tips can also be submitted through the Silent Witness tool or the Orange Safe app.
