There’s been so much movement in the Syracuse basketball program since the dawn of the transfer portal.
A lot of former SU players are now wearing different uniforms. They all played at least one game this week.
Let’s take a spin around and see what’s new with those guys:
Chance Westry: He’s now at UAB. After an underwhelming unofficial debut in an exhibition game against Western Kentucky, Westry was terrific against Mississippi Valley State. (Ranked No. 365 in Kenpom.) He started the game, played 20 minutes, shot 8-of-12 overall, 3-of-5 from 3, five rebounds, three assists, no turnovers.
It’s hard not to root for Westry, who endured three disastrous seasons of physical issues at Auburn and Syracuse. UAB won, 106-55. Yikes.
Quadir Copeland: He followed Will Wade from McNeese to N.C. State. Started the opener against North Carolina Central (337th Kenpom). Scored 15 points on 3-of-3 shooting, 1-for-1 from 3, 8-for-10 from the free throw line, three assists, no turnovers. He played almost 18 minutes. N.C. State won 114-66. Yikes again, though yay for the ACC, which got another lopsided score, all in a quest to game the NET.
Fun fact: N.C. State plays UAB Friday night. It’s at 9 p.m. on the ACC Network.
Maliq Brown: Second season at Duke. I watched the first half of Duke-Texas Tuesday night. Broadcasters said Brown had a knee issue that kept him out of the Blue Devils exhibition games. Against Texas (Kenpom 45th), he came off the bench, played 14 minutes, was 1-for-3 overall, 0-for-1 from 3, had a rebound, a steal, three turnovers and five fouls. Duke plays smothering defense.
Chris Bell: He’s now at Cal. The Bears beat CSU Bakersfield (Kenpom 259th) 87-60. Bell started, played 22 minutes, scored five points on 1-of-5 shooting, had two assists, three turnovers and an offensive rebound. On Thursday night, Bell started, played 24 minutes and scored 12 points in Cal’s 77-67 win over Wright State. He was 3-of-7 overall, 0-for-4 from 3 and had six rebounds.

Justin Taylor: Second season at James Madison. His team lost to Akron, 85-71, on Monday. Akron is 87th in Kenpom. Taylor came off the bench, played seven minutes, scored a single point on a free throw and grabbed two rebounds. On Wednesday, Taylor came off the bench, played nine minutes and blocked a shot. JMU beat Washington and Lee, a DIII school, 70-56.
Kyle Cuffe: He’s now at Mercer. His team lost 76-61 to Tennessee (No. 15 Kenpom) Monday. Cuffe came off the bench, played 11 minutes, went 0-for-5 during those 11 minutes and did not score. On Wednesday, he played 18 minutes, scored 12 points, was 4-of-10 overall and 3-of-6 from 3. Mercer beat Division III LaGrange.
Elijah Moore: He’s now at Utah. He struggled to make shots during the Utes’ two exhibitions. In an 84-75 win over San Jose State (151st Kenpom), he came off the bench, played five minutes, took one shot and missed it.
William Patterson: He’s now at New Orleans in the Southland Conference. His team upset TCU 78-74 on opening night. Patterson came off the bench, played seven minutes and collected two fouls.
Petar Majstorovic: He’s at Long Beach State. His team lost 77-45 to San Diego State, No. 25 in Kenpom and always a defensive juggernaut. Majstorovic started the game, scored 13 points (5-of-10, 2-of-4) and had 10 rebounds. He also committed six turnovers.
