Man rescued after boat hits rocks on Oneida Lake, deputies say

Sylvan Beach, N.Y. — A boater was rescued Saturday afternoon after his boat hit submerged rocks and became grounded on Oneida Lake, deputies said.

Around 2 p.m., the sheriff’s marine patrol went to a boat accident near the breakwater by Buoy 106, according to a news release from the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office.

Bradley T. Dougherty, 50, of Rome, was operating an 18-foot Stingray open-bow boat when he hit rocks while attempting to navigate back into the Erie Canal, deputies said.

High winds of 12 to 20 mph and waves between two and four feet pushed the disabled boat onto the rocky breakwater between Buoy 104 and the eastern shoreline of Oneida Lake, deputies said. Waves began washing over the bow and stern as the boat became stuck.

The Sylvan Beach Volunteer Fire Department rescued Dougherty from the grounded boat and brought him to the emergency wall on the Erie Canal.

Vineall Ambulance evaluated him, and he declined further medical treatment, deputies said.

The boat is expected to be removed Sunday by Triple T Towing and Underwater Recovery, pending safer water conditions.
