Fayetteville, NY - The proposal to open a new chain supermarket in Fayetteville is still alive and moving forward, said Mayor Michael Small.
It’s been six years since plans for a new grocery store were proposed for 547 E. Genesee St., site of the former O’Brien & Gere engineering and manufacturing facility.
The village approved plans in 2022 for the 56,000-square-foot Hannaford supermarket. It was first proposed in 2019.
But lawsuits by a Fayetteville resident, Marguerite Ross, put plans on hold. With the last of the appeals turned down by a court in September, village officials recently reached out to the supermarket chain to see if the plan is still alive.
“It all appears to be on track,” Small said Tuesday. “They are looking into what they have to do to clean up the site. Things are moving forward, but it’s moving slowly.”
The developer has to remediate the site, which is designated a brownfield. The property is in need of environmental remediation because of contamination caused by Accurate Die Casting years ago.
Some residents thought as soon as the lawsuits were settled, construction would begin. But Small said that’s not the case.
“They have to restart the process,” he said.
There was talk about a sign application, but the developer doesn’t have the specifications yet.
“This is still a viable project for Fayetteville,” Small said.
