New state football rankings: Section III squad dethrones perennial power to become new No. 1

Syracuse, N.Y. — There’s a new No. 1 in the latest New York State Sportswriters’ Association football rankings in 8-man football and it’s a Section III champion. Morrsiville-Eaton unseated Frankfort-Schuyler at the top.

The Mavericks defeated the Maroon Knights to snap Frankfort-Schuyler’s reign atop Section III.

Morrisville-Eaton — along with the rest of the champions from Section III — will now take on unfamiliar foes with regional play beginning this week.

The Mavericks will play honorable mention Taconic Hills from Section II in the 8-man state regional semifinals at noon on Saturday at SUNY Morrisville.

The rest of the Section III teams will play regional championship games against Section IV teams at Vestal High School on Friday and Saturday.

Friday’s games will be No. 4 Whiteboro against No. 18 Union-Endicott and No. 4 Lowville vs. No. 1 Tioga

Saturday’s games include No. 1 Christian Brothers Academy against honorable mention Elmira, No. 4 New Hartford against No. 7 Owego Free Academy and No. 5 General Brown vs. No. 1 Chenango Forks.

The state rankings will be released by the NYSSWA every Wednesday throughout the season.
