Syracuse, N.Y. — Assistant coach Jeff Bobbett is on the cusp of becoming the man in charge of keeping the Skaneateles boys hockey program as the standard-setter in New York state.

According to the agenda for Tuesday night’s board of education meeting, Bobbett is up for approval for appointment to the head coaching position for the Lakers. If approved, he will replace Mitch Major.

Major, who coached the team since 2000-01, stepped down in March after helping the Lakers become the first team in state history to win three straight Division II titles. Major took the Lakers to five state titles overall.

Bobbett played hockey at Skaneateles and graduated in 1993. He joined the Lakers as an assistant coach in 2005 and was on board for all five of those crowns.

Bobbett declined comment. Major said knowing that Bobbett was on hand to perhaps replace him made his decision to step aside easier.

“He’s a straight-shooter who is very, very knowledgeable‚" Major said. “He understands the culture of our program here in Skaneateles. And then the 20 years we’ve spent together, we spent a lot of time together. So he definitely is ready. It’s going to be a really smooth transition.”

Bobbett’s son, Luke, is an All-CNY player for the Lakers.
