One of Upstate New York’s most luxurious resorts has once again landed on several “best of” lists, and this year, it took the top spot for travelers who don’t want their wellness routines to take a vacation.
Mohonk Mountain House, a Victorian-era retreat perched on the crest of the Shawangunk Ridge, was named the No. 1 hotel fitness center in the nation by readers of USA Today. Located about 90 miles north of New York City in New Paltz, the all-inclusive resort blends indoor and outdoor fitness experiences.
It’s a title that might surprise first-time visitors. With its turrets, fireplaces, and antique halls, Mohonk looks more like a place for afternoon tea than weight training. But beyond the grand veranda and lakefront views, guests will find a state-of-the-art fitness center with group fitness classes ranging from strength and conditioning to dance, Pilates, tai chi and more.
Outside, Mohonk’s 40,000-acre setting offers endless opportunities to stay active. In summer, guests can swim, kayak, canoe or pedal boat on the lake, or play golf, tennis, pickleball and even disc golf. In winter, the ice skating rink comes alive.
Year-round, visitors can hike miles of trails through the “Gunks” or test their limits on the Hudson Valley’s first via ferrata, a guided rock climbing route built into the cliffs.
No stranger to accolades, Mohonk Mountain House was also named one of the best romantic getaways, adding another honor to its growing list of national recognition.
The resort’s latest fitness crown joins several other USA Today 10Best categories as well:
- Best Family Resort (No. 7): Buffet meals, outdoor activities included, and a Kid’s Club make it perfect for all ages.
- Best Historic Resort (No. 10): A National Historic Landmark first acquired by the Smiley family in 1869, Mohonk retains its Victorian charm.
- Best Hotel Restaurant (No. 6): Farm-to-table dining with panoramic views of the Catskill Mountains makes it a favorite for special occasions, especially at sunset.
- Best Hotel Spa (No. 7): Mineral pools, steam rooms, saunas, and outdoor treatment areas complete the wellness experience.
