Syracuse, N.Y. -- The season’s first lake effect snowstorm is likely to drop heavy snow and make for difficult driving today in much of Upstate New York.
Several inches of snow are forecast for areas downwind of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. Syracuse could see 6 inches today. The traditional lake effect bull’s-eyes of Tug Hill and southwestern New York could get even more.
The counties along both lakes are under winter weather advisories.
“Plan on slippery road conditions,” the National Weather Service said. “Several rounds of lake effect snow showers, wind and any heavier snow showers may reduce visibilities.”
Snow will fall off and on today as narrow lake effect snow bands shift wobble, the weather service said. Wind gusts of up to 30 mph will blow the snow around and make it difficult to see.
Temperatures will rise only into the mid 30s today, and the wind will make it feel like the mid 20s.
The snow is expected to wind down in Western New York by early afternoon and in Central New York by evening. A few lingering snow showers could linger into Wednesday morning.
The snow that sticks to the ground and trees won’t be there for long. Temperatures are back up into the 40s on Wednesday, with light rain falling throughout the day.
