Editorial cartoons for Nov. 9, 2025: GOP election losses, Mamdani victory, Dick Cheney dies

The first election since President Donald Trump returned to the White House in January was a wipeout for Republicans. Democrats won governor races in New Jersey and Virginia. A Democratic Socialist was elected mayor of New York. Californians approved redrawing voting districts to add Democratic seats to Congress.

Drew Sheneman leads the editorial cartoon gallery with his view of the election as a train wreck and Trump as the engineer denying any blame for it.

Dana Summers sees Trump as a weight holding Republicans underwater. Nick Anderson’s donkey, a symbol of the Democratic Party, guffaws after leaving hoof marks on Trump. David Horsey views Democratic wins as a blow for the “no kings” movement. Bill Bramhall depicts Uncle Sam dragging himself over the election finish line ... to the starting line of the 2026 midterms. Anderson comments on the redistricting wars by channeling M.C. Escher’s “Drawing Hands,” only this time the hands are erasing each other.

Zohran Mamdani was elected mayor of New York City, defeating former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist and a Muslim, used his victory speech to provoke Trump. Phil Hands, Bramhall, Summers and Joey Weatherford weigh in with editorial cartoons.

Other topics in this week’s gallery include the death of former Vice President Dick Cheney, an architect of post-9/11 conflicts and later a critic of Trump; another week without a deal to end the federal government shutdown; Trump’s fact-challenged interview on “60 Minutes”; and Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s decision to retire from Congress.

Cartoons were drawn by Jack Ohman, Nick Anderson, Bill Bramhall, Dana Summers, Drew Sheneman, Walt Handelsman, David Horsey, Phil Hands, Joel Pett and Joey Weatherford of Tribune Content Agency; and Mike Luckovich, Steve Breen and Michael Ramirez of Creators Syndicate.
