CNY plant grew into a crucial supplier to the U.S. auto industry. Then disaster hit: Fifteen years ago, Novelis Inc. made a decision that would turn its factory in the tiny Oswego County town of Scriba into a powerhouse in the automotive aluminum market. Expanding into aluminum sheets for automakers paid off big, leading to nearly $1 billion invested in the plant over the past 15 years and doubling its workforce to nearly 1,200 people. But since a fire tore through the ceiling of its hot mill in September, Novelis has had to fight to save the plant and rebuild its surprisingly essential role in the U.S. auto industry.

County ratchets up pressure on 91-year-old widow to leave home on Micron site: Onondaga County is putting new pressure on a 91-year-old Clay widow to vacate the house where the county promised she could live the rest of her life. To make way for Micron Technology’s chipmaking complex, the Onondaga County Industrial Development Agency is now starting a court action against Azalia King called eminent domain. This follows the order of eviction the county served on King in September. Both actions are designed to void an agreement the county signed 20 years ago that allowed Azalia King and her husband, Glenn, to live out the rest of their lives in the house on Caughdenoy Road.

What’s the status of a proposed grocery store in Fayetteville?: It’s been six years since plans for a new grocery store were proposed for the site of the former O’Brien & Gere engineering and manufacturing facility in Fayetteville. Court challenges slowed the process, but the last of the appeals was turned down by a court in September. So, with court fights seemingly over, how long before the store actually gets built?

The Syracuse men’s basketball team’s defense is suffocating opponents, but tougher tests are coming (podcast): If you watched the Syracuse Orange basketball team struggle defensively last season, you might be doing a double-take at what you’re seeing on the court so far this season. Through the first two games of the 2025-26 season, the Orange’s defense has been downright stifling. But the question remains: Does this newfound defensive identity actually mean anything, or is it just the product of playing against severely overmatched opponents? Mike Waters and Donna Ditota discuss this in the latest Inside Syracuse Basketball podcast.
Syracuse football’s transfer portal performance needs to be fixed: Syracuse lost 38-10 on Saturday against Miami, an opponent who had the ACC’s top-ranked transfer class last offseason, according to On3.com. The Orange’s transfer class ranked No. 68 out of 70 Power-Four teams. The difference was evident. Head coach Fran Brown and his staff seemed to load up on players with strong recruiting pedigrees but little track record. Chris Carlson says that something needs to change over the next two years if Syracuse is interested in pushing its chips into the middle and capitalizing on the presence of quarterback Steve Angeli.
