Update: Syracuse senior guard JJ Starling will not play in Saturday’s game vs. Drexel.
Philadelphia, Pa. ― There is a chance that Syracuse could get starting guard JJ Starling back for the Orange’s game today against Drexel.
Starling, a 6-foot-4 senior, sat out the Orange’s 83-43 victory over Delaware State last Saturday after suffering an injury to his right leg in the team’s season-opener against Binghamton on Monday, Nov. 3.
Starling will be a “game-day’' decision, according to SU director of athletic communications Pete Moore.
That is a sign of improvement since the Orange’s last game.
Syracuse and Drexel will play as part of the Basketball on Broad double-header at the XFinity Mobile Arena today. Penn State and LaSalle will meet at 1:30 p.m. with the SU-Drexel following at approximately 3:30. Both games will be streamed on Peacock.
Syracuse freshman Kiyan Anthony replaced Starling in the Orange’s starting lineup for the Delaware State game. Anthony responded with 19 points and four assists in the blowout win.
After today’s game against Drexel, Syracuse will next play Monmouth on Tuesday at the JMA Wireless before traveling to Las Vegas and taking on No. 1-ranked Houston in the Players Era Festival on Monday, Nov. 24.
Starling led Syracuse in scoring last season, averaging 17.8 points per game. He and Donnie Freeman were the only two players that returned to Syracuse off last year’s team.
