Auburn, N.Y. — Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck announced Tuesday that he will not run for re-election next year.
Schenck, 54, has worked for the sheriff’s office for nearly three decades. He said in a news release that he wants to take a “new path” that would let him pursue new opportunities and spend more time with family and friends.
“Our agency’s mission states, in part, that we will work to secure and maintain a safe community and enhance the lives of all citizens we serve,” he said. “I have done my very best to uphold that mission throughout each role I’ve held, and it has been both rewarding and a privilege to do so.”
He would have been up for reelection in November 2026. His term in office ends on Dec. 31, 2026.
Schenck was first elected sheriff in 2018 on the Republican, Conservative and Independence party lines. He won a second term four years later.
He did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday afternoon.
No candidates have filed paperwork yet to run for sheriff next year, according to records from the state elections board.
