Section III had the luxury of having 13 wrestlers competing in their respective semifinal rounds this weekend.
That number was whittled down to seven grapplers moving onto championship bouts on Saturday. By the time it was all said and done, three Section III wrestlers had brought home state titles.
Lowville’s Patrick Grimsey (145), Carthage’s Kamdyn Dorchester (285) and Sackets Harbor’s Kayleb Martin (170) all captured their first state crown at the championship tournament at MVP Arena in Albany.
“It feels pretty good. It hasn’t really sunk in me for yet and it’s hard to put into words,” Dorchester said. “It’s an unbelievable feeling.”
Dorchester is the second Comets wrestler in program history to reach the top of the podium. Shayne Brady won the program’s first individual state title in the 2012-13 season.
“It’s awesome to see the hard work pay off,” Carthage coach Don Dorchester said. “It’s just good to see Kamdyn’s dream come true. When Shayne won it in 2013, you don’t forget about it, but you know it’s hard to get back (to states). It’s really spoken volumes how far our program has come over the years.”
Kamdyn Dorchester faced New Hartford’s Chris BelMonte in the 285-pound championship bout. Kamdyn Dorchester notched an escape point in the second period, which turned out to be enough for the senior to win a 1-0 decision.
“I expected a tough matchup (against BelMonte),” Kamdyn Dorchester said. “He and I have been going at it for years, so it was good to get the win over him. I feel like half of Carthage was in the stands (on Saturday), so I got a ton of support. It was great.”
Martin dominated in his 145-pound match versus Bolivar-Richburg’s Tayvn Macdonell, coming away with a 13-2 win by major decision.
Grimsey, a four-time state qualifier, snatched Lowville’s third state championship title in program history. Lowville’s last champion was in the 2003-04 season, when Taylor Malone took home the 125-pound title.
Holland Patent’s Andrew Juliano (108 pounds) placed second, falling short of capturing a second-straight title. In the championship bout, Juliano lost a 10-7 sudden victory to Oyster Bay’s Colton Schmiesing.
Trent True, competing in the 190-pound bracket for the Golden Knights, finished second. Appearing in his first-ever title bout, True lost a 10-1 major decision to Plainedge’s Devin Downes.
South Jefferson’s Brock Frederick was the runner-up in the 124-pound bracket. He fell 4-0 to Norwich’s Maverick Beckwith in the title match.
